My fix was to cut a small block of walnut that would maintain the pressure plate in a square and upright position. I glued this in place to prevent it from moving.  A better fix would be a small bracket.

Driven Motor assembly in an operational mode.  The reels need to be pre-loaded with 8 turns to maintain the recoil as the element is retracted.
